A Brief History of
Big Theatre

In 2009 Big Theatre ran its first summer school, with twenty participants aged between 7 and 11, and over two weeks rehearsed and performed “Jason and the Argonauts”. Ten years later in 2019 their summer production of “The Housekeeper” included three cast members who had been in that original production. In the ten years between Big Theatre had run countless workshops, produced 17 plays and worked with over 200 young people. 2020 brought the lockdown and the end of the summer school, the older members of the company had now finished their time at university and were entering the real world (to date five ex-members are working professionally in the theatre) and new projects had to be found. During lockdown we produced a play for voices, “In Loco”. It featured a cast of 21 and was recorded over the internet.
Bringing us up to date, since 2021 Big theatre has mostly been involved in project work, including the Mother an Daughter Dance Project, and the Inter-Generational Choir. In 2024 Big Theatre formed the theatre company of 7 to 11 year olds, who are looking forward to their first production in 2025.
